Low sex drive? Gaining weight? Then you may not need more estrogen, you just might be low on testosterone.
Karlis Ullis, M.D., an endocrinologist, writes: "It is clear to me, both from my clinical practice and from research, that testosterone is vital for women to preserve their lean mass and to prevent obesity. Not only will testosterone help mobilize body fat and negate some of the fat storing effects of estrogen, it is also extremely effective in building lean mass in women - even at small doses. Hormone replacement therapy that only includes estrogen and progesterone but leaves out testosterone is a curse of many a women’s fat loss program."
Women do produce testosterone naturally, in much lower levels than men, so it makes sense that when all the other hormones start to reduce levels at menopause, testosterone levels will fall too. Plus the estrogen-dominence problem just adds to any imbalance.
Like progesterone, natural testosterone supplements are being produced just for women. The dose for women is much less than for men. You don't want to start growing a beard after all. The results as far as weight loss, increased muscle tone, increased bone density, and increased sex drive/libido are remarkable, and verified by numerous studies. Dr. Elizabeth Barrett-Connor, a famous name in the field of hormone replacement research, headed part of the Rancho Bernardo Study that yielded much valuable information about postmenopausal women and testosterone. Women reported not just restored libido, but also improved mood and greater energy, less anxiety and more assertiveness.
There are women (and lots of them) who even before menopause have problems with low libido - it may just be low testosterone levels. And if you have the dry, thin skin common among post-menopausal women, restoring testosterone to normal levels can make skin look much thicker and smoother than it was before.
Before starting any hormone therapy, you should test your hormone levels. There are saliva at home tests available for this, or you can have your doctor do the testing. Don't be surprised if he/she pooh-poohs the idea - be firm, insist on the test and if your levels are low, do something about it.
If your levels turn out to be low, a testosterone cream designed for women, could make all the difference. Do go for a cream or gel that is absorbed through the skin. Oral supplements pass through the liver, which is not the 'natural' route hormones take in the body.
Testosterone is the primordial hormone for promoting both a sexy body and a better sex life, for both men and women. So, to get buff, get back you libido, firm up that skin - testosterone might just be the ticket.
